Hey Y’all

Once Upon a Rock, the Story Begins…

Scott and Ashley Thornberry here, the folks behind Rock Hard Solutions. We’ve been in the trenches of construction for decades, leading teams and getting our hands dirty with every project under the sun.

Over at T&C Contracting, our family’s other pride and joy, we live and breathe hard work and a close-knit vibe. It’s about grit, loyalty, and making sure everyone feels like part of the crew.

On a fateful day at a construction conference, Scott walked around a corner and literally bumped into the future. He discovered German-made rock-cutting technology that’s about to change the game in the industry!

Driven by curiosity and a knack for seizing opportunities, Scott secured an exclusive license to bring Kemroc’s cutting-edge products to the USA. That’s when Rock Hard Solutions was born – out of sheer excitement and a commitment to revolutionize how we tackle rock excavations.

The Rock Hard Solutions Story

I was born into the construction business long before websites and the internet.

I imagine many of you reading this are the same. Several years ago, when it became apparent that our contracting firm needed a website, we hired a developer and I basically phoned it in, quite frankly because our business gets zero customers from the internet! It’s a nice site and it suits our needs. When I came up with the idea for Rock Hard Solutions, I quickly realized I wasn’t going to be able to phone this one in, as the business model will depend heavily on the internet. So, instead of hiring a developer, my wife and I found a partner who has taken it as a personal challenge to create an amazing site. Here’s the problem. She said “Scott, you have to tell your story!”. Well, upon significant reflection, I realized that’s quite a long story that started when I was just ten years old. So here it goes.

How we got here

Dad sent me 150 miles from home to run a dozer pulling a bog disk on the largest dirt job he had tackled to date.

In 1982 my father was faced with a decision as the company he worked for decided to close their doors. He could have gone to work for anyone, but an old mentor he had met along his journey convinced him to strike out on his own. The business he started, and more importantly, the team he created is called T&C Contracting, and it is still in business today. I literally started in the shop sweeping floors at ten, not because Dad made me, quite the opposite. He couldn’t keep me away from the big toys! I was in love with iron, particularly yellow iron. When I would slip away unnoticed from my tasks, he would always find me on whatever machine was parked out back awaiting service. He even tried sticking a shovel in my hand during my teenage years, but again, I always found my way into a seat instead. In the summer of my sixteenth year, Dad sent me 150 miles from home to run a dozer pulling a bog disk on the largest dirt job he had tackled to date. It was 1986, and I hated pulling that disk. So boring. Again, every time he left, I found my way onto bigger machines, this time an old 631C wide nose scraper. He didn’t like me running that machine, saying it was too dangerous, but every time he moved me back to the disk, as soon as he left, me and this old operator, who loved the disk, would trade back. Finally, I guess I really got too good on the old pan, because he stopped making me trade back when he caught us. I spent the next summer on a 972 Liebherr loading trucks on a large marina project that today is one of the crown jewels of the river scene in Louisville. Little did I know at the time that my days as an operator were numbered. Pretty soon, I went to college, but I didn’t stop working. I traded levers for a pickup truck, a pencil, and a cell phone (also new tech at that time). While I was in school and supposedly learning the skills necessary to take over the business one day, I never lost my desire to be on or around heavy equipment. Every morning, I went to my job managing a landfill to get my crew started then go to class. After classes were over, I went back to the plant and wrapped up the day, often jumping on a dozer to help the other operators close up for the night. Operating heavy equipment was my favorite thing, period.

The early days of T&C Contracting

Now as you know, life never stays the same.

After college, of course, I became more involved with the business side of things, but I still loved that iron. Since I couldn't really operate anymore, I focused on finding better, more efficient equipment to improve our processes. This is when I really learned to open my eyes and not discount any “new-fangled” machinery until you try it. If you are old enough to remember the old DJB articulated trucks, you probably remember your first reaction upon seeing it. It looked like a scraper and a dump truck had a baby. I can’t write my reaction here, but those old trucks have evolved into the six-wheel drive articulated monsters that many of us have used with great success over the last twenty years. This, consequently, was the same reaction I had when I saw my first Kemroc chain cutter, but more on that in a minute.

An obsession with finding solutions

So, this is my story, or the part at least that explains why I am nuts about heavy equipment.

As my career evolved, I ran into so many interesting projects that presented challenges that must be met. I learned how to meet these challenges from my dad. My father was a pioneer in our region at leveraging new technology. He had the very first GPS enabled dozer in Louisville, long before a company called Trimble popped up on the scene. It wasn’t fancy, it could not cut a slope, and it certainly didn’t have automated control, but it showed the operator a plan view, and a cut or fill at a specific point. It was amazing! Dad kept up with technology as it matured and he always told me to stay on the cutting edge, even if I had to take on debt to do it. He was not wrong. This is exactly how Rock Hard Solutions came to be!

How Rock Hard Solutions came to be!

I turned a corner and ran straight into a Kemroc EK 150.

Trying to heed my father’s lesson and stay on the cutting edge, I could sense that this was a tool that would give us an edge on specialty projects. And I was right. We have two of them now. But that’s not the story! I was given a free pass to get into this show by a vendor because you had to pay for an entire week, and I was only going to be there for an hour. Since this fellow had saved me about three hundred dollars, I felt like a personal thank you was in order, so I set off in search of his booth inside the convention center. I looked for about an hour and never found him. Frustrated, and on a schedule, I decided to leave and just call him on the phone. That’s when it happened. In my haste to get back out to beat the traffic, I turned a corner and ran straight into a Kemroc EK 150. Remember when I told you how I felt the first time I saw a DJB truck? Well, it happened again. This attachment was the weirdest, yet coolest looking thing I had seen in a long time. Imagine shrinking a Tesmec 1100 rock trencher (we had one of those too) down to the size of a hydraulic breaker and sticking it on an excavator. My first impression was “why had no one thought of this sooner!” I stopped right there, forgetting all about my plans and schedule and I started talking to the Kemroc team. I knew right then I wanted to try this thing, so try it we did. I took it to a project where we had a couple thousand feet of water line in rock. We had budgeted about two weeks to hammer the rock out with a breaker, so I decided to try it there. I went to the site when we started it up, and of course the operator told me I was crazy, and he could hammer it faster than this thing could. I reminded him who was signing his check and told him to get after it. I went back to the site three days later to find the machine sitting. Well, I just about blew a fuse. I drove around until I found the operator prepared to deliver a glorious, well thought out rebuke. I asked him why he wasn’t running the chain cutter, obviously a bit perturbed and he just laughed. He said, “I’m done boss! unless you want me to chew that truck of yours up”. After I picked my jaw off the ground, I went to look at his work. Sure enough, two weeks of hammering done in three days! I bought the EK 150 that day.

The trade show that changed it all.

Securing exclusive rights to bring Kemroc tech to the United States

This part of the story begins with me asking Kemroc if they have a dealer in my state.

Now this would be the logical end to this story, since I have explained how I came to love heavy equipment, my proclivity to “stay on the cutting edge of construction technology”, and how I met Kemroc. The problem is, there is much more I want to share, and since no one is probably reading this far down anyway, I’ll just keep going because it gets far more interesting! This part of the story begins with me asking Kemroc if they have a dealer in my state. They obviously replied that they did not, so I asked if they wanted one. This is where the seed of Rock Hard Solutions germinated. We began selling Kemroc products locally and the product began to gain traction. Once we secured the exclusive rights for Kentucky and Indiana, that’s when I started thinking bigger. I’ve been a contractor for a long time, and several people have asked why I did not keep this technology for myself as a strategic advantage. Well, I’ve met many contractors over the last forty years, and they are all good people who work hard and face the same battles I do on a daily basis. Quite frankly, I wanted to help them and share what I have learned. It’s always more fun to partner than compete.

Klaus, the man behind Kemroc

Now bear with me, if you’ve lasted this long. This next part is important. As I began to get more and more serious about selling Kemroc products, as you might expect, I began to meet the Kemroc team, culminating with its founder, Klaus, at Conexpo in 2022. Klaus invited us to his factory in Germany where I learned the Kemroc story. I am telling you this, because without Kemroc, there would never be a Rock Hard Solutions. Klaus picked me and my friend Jason up from the airport and we began the two-and-a-half-hour drive from Frankfurt to their facility in Bad Salzungen. About two hours in Klaus remarked very casually “there’s the border”. Now it’s been a long time since I took geography, but I knew my destination was smack in the geographic center of Germany, so I asked “What border, Klaus?” He indicated it was the old border between east and west Germany and I was floored. If you grew up during the cold war, as I did, east Germany was a place of mystery and admittedly a slightly fearsome destination to think about when we were kids. I realized that I was riding around in a Tesla with a German engineer who grew up in a very different lifestyle than I did. Immediately, my respect for the man doubled, and I set about learning his story. As a young engineer in the salt mines of east Germany, Klaus designed drill bits and other cutting tools to improve efficiency in mine operations. After German reunification in 1991, Klaus took his expertise and engineering passion and began his own successful business manufacturing drum cutters. Since that time, Kemroc has expanded their product line to include all different types of cutting attachments. Most importantly on this trip, I learned about the Kemroc team philosophy which mirrors our own. I can genuinely say that I have partners in Germany that care more about relationships and quality service, than the next sale. For that reason, I am confident we can sell quality, German engineered products to our partners here in the US and support them fully. I don’t know where this story will go next, all I know for certain is the ride isn’t over yet. I hope you’ll join us and see for yourself.

The Kemroc story and the evolution of a revolution in the industry

Scott Thornberry
